success is a process. excellence is the outcome.
coach kyle johnson blends elite-level experience with a teaching-first approach to performance. the work is collaborative, technical, and built around long-term progress.
over three decades, Kyle Johnson has coached athletes to USA Swimming National finals, NCAA D1 championships, Olympic Trials, IRONMAN World Championships, and more. at home on the west coast, he is now a coach of coaches.
this isn’t one-size-fits-all coaching. it’s a process to help coaches sharpen vision, build a plan, and take ownership of their development. talent is teachable, limited only by imagination.
“who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.”

what are you seeking?
More important, how is what you’re finding out there in the world sitting with you? If you’re ready to get curious, change your perception, and break the mold set out for coaches and athletes previously, my teaching is open and free to you. My clients often arrive describing discontent with the current state of sports coaching: erratic club politics, unregulated parents, a dismal outlook on their state of the sport. I challenge the idea that these coaches are wrong; that they just need to ‘pay their dues’ or put in years of servitude for no substantial promise of later gain. What if we instead challenge the systems that have made the practice of coaching out of balance?
On this site, I host my ideas about the philosophy of sports coaching, my challenges to models of perception, and obsessions in movement I’ve had decades to question. My old mistakes will save you future time. My knowledge is accessible and internally cultivated. Coaching is the gift we share. If you are interested in reading more, please click around! The site is designed for you to stumble upon hidden gems.

“His unique approach comes from an instinctive understanding of the water in which he uses to create healthy, effective patterns of movement with his swimmer. Personally, my connection and ‘feel’ for the water has improved immensely since I began working with Coach Kyle. I no longer have to manufacture speed forcefully by attempting to move the water. My heightened awareness of my body now allows me to move gracefully with the water. Simply put, Coach Kyle has made me a ‘swimmer’ and I am confident that he will take me to the level I need to get to in this sport.”

“When I met Coach Kyle and began working with him, I was not only severely injured, but I had lost all of my passion for swimming, as well as my confidence. Coach Kyle not only got me back in the water, but he coached me to compete with the top 1% at the Olympic Trials. And along the way, he helped me rediscover my love of the sport. Thanks to Coach Kyle, I broke records, but more importantly: I gained the confidence to push myself to finish my swimming career on my own terms and at the top of my game.”

“I began meeting with Kyle knowing that I wanted to learn and push my coaching further. I wasn’t at all sure what that actually meant nor what would ensue: In our mentorship, my coaching approach has flourished with Kyle fusing an alchemical approach with swimming’s complex variables. Daily, Kyle answers my every question, and inspires more questions that I didn’t know I had. Pushing a new revolution of thought among the next generation of coaches, Kyle is a candleholder to one of society’s most important roles.”

The Podium Collective: Small Group Coaching for Competitive Swimmers Ages 13–18
Swimming Fast Is Not the Whole Job
Athletes who perform at their best, season after season, are not just the ones with the most yardage or the best technique. They are the ones who know how to think under pressure, recover with intention, lead in the water and out of it, and show up consistently when things get hard.
What is The Podium Collective?
Virtual, small group coaching program for competitive swimmers ages 13 to 18. Not a technique clinic or motivation seminar – an ongoing environment where serious athletes learn to build the mental and physical habits that high performance requires.
2x/month for one-hour sessions:
• Session 1: Teaching Session
• Session 2: Peer Coaching Session

The Coaches Collective
Small group mentorship for serious swim coaches – and the partner most associations don’t give you.
Most coaching philosophies are slogans. They sound good on paper and dissolve under pressure. Most coaches face that pressure alone – no peer community, no thinking partner, no space to step back and ask the bigger questions.
What is The Coaches Collective?
A small virtual group mentorship for age group swimming coaches serious about growth. No courses, no webinars. A professional community with real conversations, honest feedback, and a structured framework for becoming a better coach.
Our hour-long biweekly sessions:
• Session 1: Teaching Session
• Session 2: Community Session – real situations, worked through together.
Who This is For:
• Age group swimming coaches, 1 to 15+ years of experience
• Coaches navigating parent communication, practice design, athlete development, or your own coaching identity
• Coaches ready to do the thinking that real development requires
• Coaches wrestling with the same problems, looking for a peer community that gets it
